Nicole Katano

Nicole Katano is a photographic artist currently based in Sonoma, CA. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, and her Masters in Ceramics from San Francisco State University.

Her current work revolves around the ability of her camera to isolate tiny fragments of time and space in such a way that otherwise fleeting details can be more consciously examined by the observer. Strongly attuned to elements of color, light and form, she draws out the texture and mood embodied in those details. Her digital images bring us close to nature: She grows the plants, often from seed, then photographs them at various points in their cycle, finally combining single images into her signature many-layered compositions. Nicole’s pictures are best understood on a sensual, nonlinear level. She uses memory, scale, and the physical world to encourage a non-verbal, emotional experience of serenity.

Nicole has exhibited her work in Los Angeles, Nashville, San Francisco, Scottsdale, Phoenix, Santa Fe, Sonoma, Healdsburg, San Diego and Atlanta, to date, and was featured, along with her husband, the painter, Marc Katano, at The Sonoma Valley Museum of Art in a joint exhibition entitled, Akin: the Art of Nicole and Marc Katano.
