These block prints are simple images, usually a symbol in a single color. The plaques, medals and badges are matter of fact authoritarian emblems, maybe commercial, maybe civil; while the meat images are more human in tone. The flag is somewhere between given its iconography.
By combining them, I am trying to make both work together in a silent anthem of patriotic discomfort. Using the sewing to unify a set of disparate images, multiple meanings can be achieved.
Steve Briscoe is a mixed media artist living in Woodland, California. He grew up in Stockton, California and attended Santa Clara University and the San Francisco Art Institute. He has been an artist in residence at Public Glass in San Francisco, Paulson Fontaine Press in Berkeley and the Bemis Center in Omaha. His work is in the collection of the Crocker Art Museum, San Jose Museum, Berkeley Art Museum, Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco and the di Rosa Foundation, among others.
His work has taken many forms, with bodies of work in constructed sculpture, photography and works on paper. More questions than answers, his explorations of materials and processes are wide-ranging and open-ended, rewarding contemplation.
