Oscar Aguilar Olea
Oscar Aguilar was born in Guanajuato, Mexico. His family moved to Mexico City, where he grew up in a family of artists. Living in Mexico City's historic downtown, they were surrounded by museums, classical music, and baroque architecture. Oscar attended fine arts school at the Academia de San Carlos which was the first major art academy established in the Americas. In the 1970s, Oscar was a founding member of SUMA, a group of artists now recognized as an important part of the evolution of modern Mexican art.
Oscar has dedicated several years to researching art techniques that include egg tempera al fresco, oils, watercolors, etchings, drawings, woodcutting, and sculpting which have become his favorite means of artistic expression. During his professional life as an artist and teacher, he continues to apply and research many of these techniques as they are the foundations of his artistic education.
Oscar’s work has been exhibited in museums and galleries in the United States, France and Mexico. In 2019 he had a solo exhibition at the Napa Valley Museum which incorporated tools and vignettes from his studio. He has also participated in recent group exhibitions in Mexico with other SUMA members celebrating the historical context of their contributions.
