In this series geometric patterns from the Platonic Solids, which represent the five basic elements: earth, air, fire, water and the universe, are intricately woven with symbols of three indicator species: bees, birds and frogs. An indicator in biology is an organism who's presence or absence provides clear signals about environmental conditions.
Peter Hassen
Peter Hassen is an American artist based in Sonoma, California. Hassen’s work focuses on themes of nature, science and spirituality. Working in a variety of mediums such as painting, photography, printmaking and sculpture, Hassen seeks to create a dialogue between these universal themes and also raises questions about societies, cultures and their commonalities.
Drawn to the underlying power of words and symbols, his projects usually begin with extensive research into systems of philosophy, religion, biology, cartography and language. Hassen has installed several public and social practice art projects which encourage reflection and invite personal discovery.
For his Sacred Sculpture Project, Hassen recreated historic religious sculptures and installed them in the wilderness in five states, shooting documentary footage, then leaving them for posterity. In the Discovery Project, Hassen buried 100 cast-stone Buddha heads on Pacific coast beaches to eventually wash ashore for future moments of inspiration and wonder.
