Seyed Alavi received a Bachelor of Science degree from San Jose State University and a Masters of Fine Art from the San Francisco Art Institute. Alavi's work is often engaged with the poetics of language and space and their power to shape reality.
For nearly two decades, Seyed has been working with civic and nonprofit institutions to create conceptual works of art to be experienced in public spaces. He has created site-specific installations for museums in New York, Long Beach, San Bernadino, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, Santa Clara and San Francisco.
You may have run into his public art work on utility boxes in Emeryville, under freeways in Oakland or walked across his “Flying Carpet” skyway at the Sacramento International Airport. Whereas many artists choose to master a specific medium and explore multiple subjects through it, Alavi works in several media.
His series of FOUND pieces represented at PERCH reflect his playful approach to sourcing ideas and giving them a philosophical twist. In this series, his vast interests culminate in bricolages that refer to ancient myths, popular culture and the collective unconscious.
