As an artist working in printmaking, mixed-media, and textiles, Sue explores how existing language and cultural structures are used to define women, ways in which feminine lineage manifest and visually creating women’s stories. Using traditional forms of women’s work - stitch and cloth, clothing items, found photos and other materials, she creates pieces that are at once comforting in their familiarity yet disquieting with an underlaying sense of urgency.
The size and material of the work vary: from “Apron Strings”, a 14’ high by 8’ wide textile installation of a family tree of handed-down recipes embroidered on aprons, to the “Seams Series” exploring the seams in clothing as holders of memory, to chine collé prints chosen for words and images used to describe girls and women. Her work continues to evolve, exploring images that evoke memory, examine layers of women’s stories and striving to create a visual cloth as a form of feminine lineage.
Sue’s work has been shown in invitational, group and juried shows in the Western States and Washington DC. She has been included in shows at the Napa Valley Museum, Sebastopol Center for the Arts and The Berkeley Art Center and her work is in private and corporate collections.
